| RHODIS NAMED TO TOP U.S. POSITION 6/11/09 - The United States National Arena Soccer Team (USNAST) announced today the appointment of FOSC Director of Coaching Craig Rhodis as its new Head Coach. Rhodis replaces Bernie Lilavois,20the original coach of the USNAST, who guided the team to a 2-4 record highlighted by a runner up finish in the 2008 Torneo Internacional de Futbol Rapido. Lilavois also earned six caps as a player and had five goals and six assists.
"We want to thank Bernie for all his hard work in putting together the first USNAST roster and representing the team and the US in a positive fashion," said PASL-Pro Commissioner and FIFRA Vice President Kevin Milliken. "We wish Bernie well in his future endeavors."
The PASL-Pro owners recently voted for a two year term limit on the Head Coach position, meaning Rhodis could lead the USNAST through 2010.
His selection was not a difficult one. Rhodis led 1790 Cincinnati to a league-best 13-3 record and won the PASL-Pro Coach of the Year Award before 1790 fell to the Stockton Cougars in the finals of the North American Championships.
Rhodis, who will turn 36 later this month, has played with the Cincinnati Silverbacks (NPSL), Cincinnati Cheetahs (USL), Cincinnati Riverhawks (A League), Lafayette Swampcats (EISL), and was a player/coach with the Lafayette Lightning (USL). Craig also played with the Portland Pythons and Utah Freezz (WISL). Recently, Craig served as a player/coach for the Cincinnati Excite (AISL) for two years.
He will be gin his second season as 1790 coach in October. Rhodis is formulating a USNAST roster for the next international event, which will20be announced in the near future.
"Now that we have a full PASL-Pro season to look back on," said Rhodis, "I want to build the team with a squad of deserving players who love the game and have the enthusiasm to represent the league and their country."
Tacoma Stars coach Greg Howes and St. Louis Illusion coach Jamie Swanner will remain as assistants. "What Craig did with 1790 last year was quite impressive," said Milliken. "They were the top defensive team and lead on special teams on both power plays and penalty killing. We feel he can take the USNAST to the next level."
Congratulations Craig from the entire FOSC family!
